Prelude Dark Pain Best Squad Compositions

Five-hero teams for Act 1 missions and bosses

Last updated:

Prelude Dark Pain limits you to five heroes per battle while Early Access offers nine recruits across eight class types. The best squads cover taunt or sustain, battlefield control, two damage profiles with different reach, and a flex slot for mission-specific utility. Individual letters on the hero rankings page matter less than closing those five roles. Below are community-tested compositions for story progression, optional world missions, and boss rematches on the Statera map.

Core role checklist

Before copying a template, confirm your lineup handles these jobs:

  1. Front line — absorbs charges, holds choke points, or taunts elites away from ranged units
  2. Control — knockback, blind, zone denial, or turret zoning to manage initiative pressure
  3. Primary DPS — efficient battle point spend for sustained damage
  4. Secondary DPS or assassin — finishes flanked targets or breaks shield lines
  5. Flex — healing, barrels, magical support, or story-required companion

Missing any pillar forces awkward skill rotations and wastes defend actions. Review combat UI basics if your team runs out of battle points before all five heroes act meaningfully.

Balanced Act 1 story squad

Tammais · Maya · Tizon (damage) · Soren · Sade

This is the most recommended first clear lineup. Tammais anchors the front and taunts crusade knights. Maya controls space with owl knockbacks—critical on caravan and cliff maps. Damage-build Tizon supplies burst and turret zoning between reposition turns. Soren stacks bleed for reliable single-target pressure. Sade’s golden cross seals approach lanes during boss phases when extra enemies spawn.

Strengths: handles mixed Ashen Crusade patrols and story set pieces without respec. Weaknesses: limited passive healing—use defend actions and Citadel consumables before long chains of optional encounters.

Burst and bleed rush

Tammais · Soren · Tizon (damage) · Gala · Rufio

For timed objectives or missions where killing the priority target ends the fight, swap Sade for Gala and add Rufio as mobile finisher. Soren opens bleed, Gala sets barrels along enemy paths, and Maya’s absence means you must manually push targets into hazards using Rufio’s mobility skills or Tizon knockback turrets if specced.

Run this squad on open terrain with destructible props. Avoid tight indoor maps where friendly fire from barrels threatens your own front line. Pair with careful keyboard targeting so detonations hit after allies move.

Control and survival

Tammais · Maya · Urza · Sade · Soren

When missions introduce sustained ranged pressure or status effects, replace damage Tizon with Urza for magical support and keep double control through Maya and Sade. Soren remains your dependable bleed DPS. Tammais still taunts, while Urza handles cleanses or buffs depending on talent choices.

Slower kills but fewer deaths—ideal for first attempts at multi-phase bosses with free initiative actions. Read boss telegraphs in the initiative queue before committing Gala-style explosive turns.

Story-flex composition

Tammais · Maya · Soren · Rayder · Tizon (support)

Narrative missions occasionally force specific companions. This template keeps the core triangle of tank, controller, and bleed DPS while slotting Rayder and support Tizon for sustain when the game prevents benching story characters. Damage drops versus optimized metas, but you avoid failing optional objectives tied to companion presence.

Upgrade to damage Tizon once optional characters can be swapped out again.

Five-hero deployment tips

Deploy order matters on grid maps with elevation. Place Tammais one tile ahead of Maya’s line of sight so knockbacks send enemies away from your back row, not into it. Reserve one battle point per round for defend on fragile heroes when assassin-type enemies appear in the faction roster.

Between missions, respec at the Citadel rather than forcing one composition through every biome. Barrels underperform in swamp tiles; cross zone control underperforms on vast plains with fast cavalry.

When to rotate heroes out

Send redundant roles to Citadel raids only when the next story fight is hours away—unavailable heroes cannot join mandatory battles. If you plan a long overworld loop, keep your five-role core intact and skip raids until the next settlement rest.

Revisit hero rankings after major patches; a single balance change can promote Gala or Urza into your default fifth slot without restructuring the entire squad.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I use the same squad for every Act 1 mission?

The balanced Tammais–Maya–Tizon–Soren–Sade lineup clears most content. Swap in Gala or Urza for specific map types or boss mechanics.

What if I missed a recruitable hero?

Substitute the same role from another character—Rufio for missing assassin slots, Urza for missing support. Rankings note which heroes overlap roles.

How do raids affect my active squad?

Heroes on Citadel raids cannot fight until they return. Do not send core five members on long raids before mandatory story nodes.

Is five heroes always better than four plus a blank slot?

You cannot leave slots empty in standard battles. Always fill five roles even if one hero is story-mandatory and suboptimal.
