Prelude Dark Pain Hero Builds

Tank, DPS, and support comps for Act 1's nine-hero roster.

Builds Hub

Squad building is the heart of Prelude Dark Pain. Early Access gives you nine heroes, sixty-three skills across the roster, and up to five deployable characters per battle — enough combinations to make every overworld patrol feel like a puzzle. Talent respecs are free, but battle points, positioning, and equipment choices still punish sloppy planning. This hub routes you to role-focused guides so you can assemble a coherent Act 1 comp without resetting every mission.

How builds work in Early Access

Each hero ships with:

  • Four active skills selectable from a larger pool as you level.
  • Two passive abilities that modify how those actives behave.
  • Virtues from branching talent trees that push a hero toward tanking, damage, or support.
  • Six shared attributes leveled on every character, feeding stats into the whole kit.

Combat runs on battle points. Every hero moves once, attacks once, and spends remaining points on as many skills as they can afford. Defending costs a point but reduces incoming damage. Flanking, height advantage, knockback, and moving environments — like the armored caravan escape — all reward builds that control space, not just raw damage numbers.

Because respecs are free, experimentation is cheap in talent points but expensive in crafting materials if you swap gear every hour. Pick a squad identity early: frontline anchor, backline damage, and control support.

Most stable Act 1 comps follow a three-role skeleton:

RoleExample heroGuide
Frontline tankTammaisTank frontline builds
Damage dealersSoren, Maya, GalaDPS and assassin builds
Support / controlTizon, SadeSupport and control builds

Fill the fourth and fifth slots with story recruits such as Rufio, Urza, or Rayder as they join the Blue Net uprising. Act 1 does not demand perfect meta — it demands answers to enemy tools: archers on high ground, Crusade bruisers in chokepoints, and Pain creatures bleeding through veil tears.

When to read each guide

Tank frontline (Tammais)

Read this first if overworld patrols kill your backline before Maya fires a volley. Tammais taunts, absorbs pressure, and scales with punishment taken. The guide covers taunt timing, attribute priorities, and gear that keeps him upright on moving battlefields.

DPS and assassin (Soren, Maya, Gala)

Read this when missions stall because enemies survive with one bar of health. Soren applies bleed then amplifies damage; Maya blinds and knocks back with her owl companion; Gala detonates barrels she alone can ignore. Together they handle single-target execution and wide cone clears.

Support and control (Tizon, Sade)

Read this when you need zone denial or sustain without sacrificing a damage slot entirely. Tizon heals and deploys turrets but can hard-pivot into damage. Sade drops a golden cross that locks down tiles — invaluable in objective missions with tight timers.

Attribute planning across the roster

Attributes overlap by design. Two heroes can both want Finesse, but five heroes cannot all stack the same stat without starving utility. A practical Act 1 spread:

  • Tammais — Vitality and Might for taunt uptime and counter-threat.
  • Soren — Might with enough Vitality to flank safely.
  • Maya — Finesse for accuracy and debuff consistency.
  • Gala — Finesse and mobility to plant barrels on chokepoints.
  • Tizon or Sade — Will for heals, turrets, or cross duration; reroute into Might if you commit to damage Tizon.

Free respecs let you fix mistakes, but material farming does not. Align attributes before crafting five weapons.

Skill synergy principles

Strong Act 1 comps chain debuffs into finishers:

  1. Setup — bleed, blind, or knockback from Soren or Maya.
  2. Control — Sade’s cross or Tizon’s traps limit escape routes.
  3. Execute — Gala barrels or buffed basic attacks clean up clustered enemies.
  4. Stabilize — Tammais taunts whoever survives the burst.

Battlefield modifiers matter as much as skill icons. High ground increases damage; moving platforms punish static tanks. Read mission briefings and swap one skill per hero before retrying — full roster swaps are rarely needed.

Gear and settlement support

Builds do not end on the talent screen. Weapons and clothes amplify whichever branch you chose. After respeccing Tizon into damage, revisit the equipment guide before your next craft session. Raids can run while you experiment, but remember raiding heroes sit out of combat until timers finish.

Heroes outside these three guides

Rufio, Urza, and Rayder join through story and World Mission choices. Some recruits can be missed based on narrative decisions Quickfire highlights in previews. The three guides above cover the most searched Act 1 archetypes; slot remaining heroes into the same role skeleton (frontline, DPS, support) using free respecs until their kits reveal a specialty.

Is Early Access worth building around?

Act 1 offers roughly fifteen hours of campaign content before optional grinding. That is enough time to validate a squad, not enough to treat any build as permanent 1.0 meta. Our Early Access review discusses price, polish, and the planned Steam price increase as new heroes and acts arrive during the one-year Early Access window.

For now, pick a role guide, craft toward it, and push the Ashen Crusade back tile by tile. Statera’s revolution belongs to squads that plan turns before they spend battle points.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can you reset hero builds for free in Early Access?

Yes. Talent points and skill selections can be reset without a currency cost. Gear crafted for a old build still costs [materials](/items/crafting-materials/) to replace.

How many heroes can you bring into battle?

Up to five heroes deploy per tactical battle in Early Access. Squad selection happens before each encounter on the world map.

Which build guide should beginners read first?

Start with [tank frontline](/builds/tank-frontline/) if you lose backline heroes often, or [DPS and assassin](/builds/dps-assassin/) if fights simply take too long.

Do builds change when new heroes launch?

Expect new synergies as the roster grows beyond nine heroes at 1.0. Act 1 builds remain viable for Act 1 content, but the meta will expand with future acts.
