Prelude Dark Pain DPS & Assassin Builds

Soren bleed, Maya hunter control, and Gala barrel traps for Act 1.

Last updated:

Damage dealers win Prelude Dark Pain fights by converting positioning into kill pressure. Early Access spotlights three heroes with distinct DPS identities: Soren the bleed-flanking blacksmith, Maya the owl-masked hunter who blinds and knocks back, and Gala the trapper who detonates barrels only she can survive. Together they cover single-target execution, cone clears, and area burst — provided a Tammais tank build keeps melee off their backs.

This guide breaks down skill priorities, attribute spreads, and equipment for each hero, plus squad combos that chain their kits efficiently.

Shared DPS principles

All damage builds in Act 1 share a few rules:

  • Flanking and high ground increase damage on directional attacks. Soren especially rewards rear and side angles.
  • Battle points limit how many skills fire per turn — plan setup turns before burst turns.
  • Debuffs first, finishers second — bleed, blind, and knockback multiply follow-up strikes.
  • Gear follows attributes — craft Might for melee, Finesse for ranged; see crafting materials for income routes.

Free talent respecs encourage experimentation, but crafting five weapons for a half-formed experiment wastes Act 1 resources. Pick one primary carry early — usually Soren or Maya — then support with the others.

Soren — bleed rogue build

Soren is the narrative protagonist and the most straightforward melee DPS in previews. His loop:

  1. Apply bleed with an active skill or flank attack.
  2. Trigger passives that boost damage against bleeding targets.
  3. Basic attack or finisher to delete priority enemies.

Skill and virtue priorities

  • Actives: one reliable bleed applicator, one gap closer or flank enabler, one finisher, one flex slot for armor break or mobility.
  • Passives: anything that amplifies vs. bleeding enemies or rewards flanking.
  • Virtues: offensive branch first; defensive virtues only if you skip Tammais occasionally (not recommended).

Attributes and gear

Stack Might until basic attacks one-shot weakened overworld grunts, then add Vitality so flanking does not kill you. Weapons with Might bonuses come before accessories. Upgrade Soren’s weapon before crafting Gala’s second barrel-focused piece unless missions demand AoE.

Rotation example

Move to flank → bleed skill → basic attack if points remain → use finisher next turn when passives align. Defend only when caught without tank support.

Maya — hunter control build

Maya fights at range with her bird companion, applying blinds and knockbacks that keep enemies off high ground. Previews highlight wide cone attacks that tag multiple targets — ideal when Crusade patrols cluster on roads.

Skill and virtue priorities

  • Actives: blind or accuracy debuff, cone shot, single-target burst, mobility or owl reposition.
  • Passives: extend debuff duration or bonus damage vs. blinded foes.
  • Virtues: Finesse-friendly branches that reward staying at maximum range.

Attributes and gear

Finesse first for accuracy and skill scaling, then Vitality if archers focus you despite tank taunt. Craft ranged-appropriate weapons before melee pieces for other heroes if Maya is your primary carry.

Synergy with Soren

Blind or knock enemies into Soren’s flank zone. Setup turns look like: Maya debuffs → Soren bleeds a blinded target → Gala barrels clustered foes if the map allows.

Gala — barrel assassin build

Gala places explosive barrels she alone is immune to — a rare self-synergy that defines her assassin/trapper hybrid role. Enemies cluster; barrels detonate; Tammais holds survivors in place.

Skill and virtue priorities

  • Actives: barrel placement, detonation or arming skill, reposition, single-target cleanup.
  • Passives: blast radius or barrel durability if available; otherwise Finesse scaling.
  • Virtues: trap and mobility branches over raw Might unless you play without barrels (why would you?).

Attributes and gear

Finesse for placement range and repositioning; light Vitality clothes because Gala intentionally plays near blasts. Do not craft heavy tank gear for her — invest those materials in Tammais.

Map awareness

Barrels shine on chokepoints and objective tiles. On moving platforms, pre-place barrels along predicted enemy paths rather than current positions. Friendly fire immunity does not help allies standing in the blast — coordinate with support control to keep Sade’s cross on the far side of detonations.

Five-hero Act 1 comp example

2SorenBleed flank DPS

Swap slot five based on mission type: Sade for zone defense, Tizon for sustained damage if built off-healer hybrid.

When fights feel too slow

If enemies survive with one bar of health:

  • Verify bleed or blind debuffs are applied before finishers.
  • Check whether you craft Might/Finesse gear for carries before support accessories.
  • Ensure Tammais taunts ranged units shooting Maya.
  • Retry with height advantage — many Act 1 losses are positional, not build-related.

Our Early Access review notes combat length as a polish pain point. Correct DPS sequencing trims turns even before balance patches land.

Future-proofing at 1.0

Full release adds more assassins and ranged DPS heroes across eight class types. Soren, Maya, and Gala remain the Act 1 tutorial for combo play. Revisit builds hub when new recruits arrive, but do not defer learning their kits — the Ashen Crusade will not wait for perfect meta charts.

Master bleed, blind, and barrel triangles now, and Statera’s revolution gains three reliable ways to end fights before the Dark Pain bleeds through the veil again.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Who is the best primary DPS in Act 1?

Previews split between Soren for bleed consistency and Maya for safe ranged damage. Gala spikes hardest on clustered maps. Pick based on your [tank](/builds/tank-frontline/) and support comfort.

Should Soren always flank?

Flanking maximizes damage when skills allow it, but sometimes holding a guarded tile next to Tammais is safer. Flank when battle points and health allow — not every turn.

Can Gala hurt allies with barrels?

Gala is immune to her own barrels; allies are not. Detonate when only enemies occupy the blast zone, or after [Sade](/builds/support-control/) locks enemies in place.

How many damage heroes should a squad run?

Most Act 1 comps run two to three damage-focused heroes with one tank and one support flex. Five pure DPS setups collapse when patrols focus fire your backline.
